A Short History of Typing Sinhala on Computers

Typing Sinhala on a computer didn't always work the way it does today. Understanding how it evolved helps explain why a tool like Sinhalata is possible now in a way it simply wasn't a couple of decades ago.
The early era: dynamic fonts, not real script
For a long stretch of early computing, most non-Latin scripts — Sinhala included — weren't natively supported by operating systems or standard character encodings. The workaround many languages relied on was what's often called a "dynamic font" approach: a custom font where Sinhala-looking glyphs were mapped onto ordinary Latin character codes. Visually, text displayed correctly as long as you had that specific font installed. Under the hood, though, the computer wasn't actually storing Sinhala characters — it was storing ordinary Latin letters that happened to be drawn with Sinhala-shaped glyphs.
Why that approach caused real problems
This font-substitution method worked for basic display, but it broke almost everything else people expect from digital text. Text wasn't searchable in any meaningful way, because the underlying characters weren't actually Sinhala. Copy-pasting into a document without the right font installed produced garbled Latin nonsense. Screen readers and accessibility tools couldn't interpret the text correctly. And documents shared between people with different font setups often displayed as broken symbols rather than legible script.
The shift to Unicode
Unicode is a single, universal character-encoding standard designed to represent every writing system in the world with its own dedicated set of code points, rather than relying on substitution tricks. Once Sinhala was incorporated into the Unicode standard with its own proper character block, all of those old problems became solvable in principle: genuinely searchable Sinhala text, correct rendering across devices and platforms without needing a specific font pre-installed, and full compatibility with modern accessibility tools.
Why transliteration tools became possible
True Unicode support for Sinhala also opened the door to a different kind of input tool: rather than requiring a dedicated Sinhala keyboard layout, software could take phonetic Latin-letter input — Singlish — and convert it in real time into proper Unicode Sinhala characters. That's the foundation Sinhalata is built on: the typing method many Sinhala speakers already use informally, converted into the real, standards-compliant script that works correctly everywhere.
