Reasoning puzzles — the kind you'll find in our IQ Test and similar assessments — reward a specific set of habits more than raw natural talent alone. Here are five practical, genuinely useful ways to get better at them.
1. Slow down before you commit to an answer
The single most common mistake on pattern and logic questions is locking onto the first plausible-looking rule and stopping there. Many puzzles are deliberately designed with a "trap" answer that fits an obvious but incomplete rule. Before selecting an answer, check it against every element in the sequence, not just the first two or three — a rule that explains the first three items but breaks on the fourth isn't the right rule.
2. Learn the common rule "families"
Most pattern-recognition puzzles draw from a fairly small set of underlying rule types: rotation, reflection, addition or removal of elements, size or shading progression, and combinations of these. You don't need to memorise a formal taxonomy, but simply being aware that these categories exist means you'll recognise them faster when they show up, rather than reasoning from scratch every time.
3. Review your mistakes, not just your score
A score alone tells you how many questions you got right; it doesn't tell you why you got the others wrong. If a puzzle app or test shows you the correct answer afterward, take a moment to understand the actual rule you missed, rather than moving straight on.
