Not all "reasoning" is the same kind of thinking. Two of the categories our IQ Test measures — pattern recognition and numerical reasoning — draw on genuinely different mental processes, and people's relative strength in each can vary quite a bit. Understanding the difference makes it easier to interpret your own results, and to know which kind of "brain workout" you might want to focus on.
What pattern recognition actually tests
Pattern recognition questions typically show a sequence of shapes, symbols, or images and ask you to identify the rule governing how they change, then apply that rule to pick the next item in the sequence. This kind of question relies heavily on visual and abstract reasoning — spotting relationships that aren't explicitly stated, purely from the structure of what's in front of you. It doesn't require any specific factual knowledge or vocabulary, which is part of why pattern-based questions are often described as "culture-fair": someone's performance depends much less on their educational background or native language than it would on, say, a vocabulary test.
What numerical reasoning actually tests
Numerical reasoning questions ask you to work with relationships between numbers — identifying a mathematical rule in a sequence, solving a short arithmetic-based puzzle, or inferring a missing value from a pattern of numbers. This draws more directly on working memory and comfort manipulating quantities mentally, often under light time pressure. Unlike visual pattern recognition, numerical reasoning tends to correlate somewhat with prior exposure to maths — not because the questions require advanced maths knowledge, but because comfort with quickly manipulating numbers is itself a practiced skill.
Why the distinction matters for interpreting your score
It's common for people to perform noticeably better on one category than the other. Someone might breeze through visual pattern questions but slow down on numerical ones, or vice versa. This isn't a sign that something is "wrong" — different reasoning categories draw on different cognitive strengths, and most people have a natural profile that leans one way or another. Looking at your performance broken down by category (rather than just an overall score) gives you a much more useful picture of your own reasoning style than a single combined number ever could.
Can you improve at each?
Yes, though the practice looks different for each. Pattern recognition tends to improve with regular exposure to varied visual puzzles — the more different "rule types" you've seen, the faster you spot new ones. Numerical reasoning improves with basic mental-arithmetic practice and comfort working with number relationships under a bit of time pressure, similar to how regularly doing quick mental maths in daily life keeps that specific skill sharp.
