Millions of Sinhala speakers around the world use a standard English (QWERTY) keyboard every day, and very few of those keyboards have Sinhala characters printed on them or configured at the operating system level. For a long time, that left people with an awkward choice: hunt through an on-screen character map, learn an unfamiliar Sinhala keyboard layout from scratch, or just give up and write in English instead. Sinhalata is our answer to that problem — a free Windows application that lets you type Sinhala using the keyboard you already know, in the way most Sinhala speakers already write informally online.

What is "Singlish," and why build around it?

Singlish — Sinhala words spelled out phonetically using Latin letters — is already the de facto way many Sinhala speakers type on phones and computers, especially in chat apps and social media, simply because it's the path of least resistance on an English keyboard. The problem is that Singlish isn't standardised, isn't searchable in the same way as proper Sinhala script, and doesn't render correctly for readers who expect actual Sinhala Unicode text — it's a workaround, not a real substitute for the writing system.

Sinhalata takes the input method people are already comfortable with — phonetic, Latin-letter typing — and converts it in real time into proper Sinhala Unicode script. You type the way you already think, and the app produces the script you actually want to end up with.

A simple example

While the exact mapping rules are documented in the app itself, the basic idea is straightforward phonetic transliteration. Typing a Sinhala word the way it sounds, using English letters, produces the matching Sinhala script automatically as you type — no separate conversion step, no copy-pasting into a converter website, and no need to switch keyboard layouts in Windows settings.

Why we built it as a Windows app, not just a website

Web-based Singlish-to-Sinhala converters have existed for years, and they're useful for one-off conversions. But they fall short for anyone who wants to write Sinhala regularly across different programs — Word documents, emails, spreadsheets, chat clients, or any other Windows application. A browser tool only works inside the browser tab it's running in. Sinhalata is installed at the operating-system level, so once it's running, you can type Sinhala directly into whatever application has focus — no switching between a converter tab and the document you're actually trying to write in, and no copy-paste round-trip.
