The problem it solves
Millions of Sinhala speakers use a standard English (QWERTY) keyboard every day, and very few of those keyboards have Sinhala characters printed on them or configured at the operating system level. That leaves people with an awkward choice: hunt through an on-screen character map, learn an unfamiliar Sinhala keyboard layout from scratch, or give up and write in English instead.
Many Sinhala speakers have adopted "Singlish" — Sinhala words spelled out phonetically using Latin letters — as a workaround, especially in chat apps and social media. But Singlish isn't standardised, isn't searchable as proper Sinhala script, and doesn't render correctly for readers who expect actual Unicode text.
How Sinhalata works
Sinhalata takes the input method people are already comfortable with — phonetic, Latin-letter typing — and converts it in real time into proper Sinhala Unicode script. You type the way you already think, and the app produces the script you actually want.
For example, to type the Sinhala word "මම" (meaning "I"), you simply type "mama" on your English keyboard, and Sinhalata produces the correct Sinhala script automatically as you type.
As you type, Sinhalata also provides:
- Letter suggestions — see possible Sinhala characters for what you've typed so far.
- Word suggestions — complete words appear as you type, so common words can be entered with fewer keystrokes.
- Font flexibility — use Unicode or different Sinhala fonts that you already have installed.
Why it's a Windows app, not just a website
Web-based Singlish-to-Sinhala converters have existed for years, and they're useful for one-off conversions. But they fall short for anyone who wants to write Sinhala regularly across different programs — Word documents, emails, spreadsheets, chat clients, or any other Windows application. A browser tool only works inside the browser tab it's running in.
Sinhalata is installed at the operating-system level, so once it's running, you can type Sinhala directly into whatever application has focus — no switching between a converter tab and the document you're actually trying to write in.
